casey riordan
Riordan is known for the creation of her iconic Shark Girl character, which for two years was kept only in Casey's notebook. For her first solo show at Packer Gallery in Chicago, she decided to bring Shark Girl into the fine art mediums making it's debut in 2004.
Shark Girl developed out of Casey’s childhood fear of sharks. In adulthood, Riordan began to notice that any feelings of fear she experienced presented with the same symptoms of her childhood phobia. Casey began identifying herself in drawings with the head of a shark. Eventually, the images morphed into the Shark Girl character we now know. Shark Girl primly wears a party dress with a large bow to counteract her dangerous visage. There is struggle between feelings of helplessness and power. She embraces her fear and goes out into the world and conquers them. How many of us might be stopped due to fear? Shark Girl reminds us that is okay to be afraid. It is in you the power to overcome your greatest fears.
