About The Artist:
Casey Riordan (born 1973) began drawing at the age of three, creating anthropomorphic figures who have since informed her work. The woman, whose work would eventually be featured in galleries and museums, spent quite a bit of time in them growing up.
Shark Girl developed out of Casey’s childhood fear of sharks. In adulthood, Riordan began to notice that any feelings of fear she experienced presented with the same symptoms of her childhood phobia. Casey began identifying herself in drawings with the head of a shark. Eventually, the images morphed into the Shark Girl character we now know. Shark Girl primly wears a party dress with a large bow to counteract her dangerous visage. There is struggle between feelings of helplessness and power.
