DOMINIQUE STEFFENS
When is it ever NOT a good time to enjoy a glass of champagne? It goes with everything, it makes a grey day happier and, it always makes you feel special. Says artist Dominique Steffens. I started painting Champagne early-on in my painting career - at that point in very abstracted compositions of large sized Champagne bottles. About five years ago I started to let it "POP" in my studio - when I developed my Pop Art series of luxury Goods.
Why Champagne Cans? I love contradictions. Why not Champagne with a cheeseburger or caviar with Coca Cola? Lichtenstein, Warhol, Johns and Rauschenberg started playing with advertisement images, icons and mundane every day objects. That's how the champagne cans collection came to me- the every day of indulgences. Two years ago I started with the "First Crush" series, which has developed into juxtapositions of full cans and crushed cans.
I have chosen to paint my series on Lucite because it provides an illusion of floating while bringing focus to the subject matter, creating a 3D like effect. I also enjoy the sparkle and shine that the plexiglass can bring to the artwork, which reminds me of the nature of Champagne, which can be shiny and bubbling. In addition You, the viewer, are also part of the painting. Due to the amazing "see-through" effect that the Lucite provides, the artwork can be superimposed against different textures or colors found in your own home. In other words, your own walls become part of the artwork and you can change the look just by hanging it on a different wall surface.
Every painting is an original and one-of-a-kind. I vary designs, colors and details and I especially enjoy customizing these paintings for personalized commissions. Ask the gallery about customized work. This could be great to commemorate the special moments in our lives.
